Awesome Challenger Hellcat Redeye beats plane in 191 MPH high speed run

We saw how many cars drove down the former space shuttle runway to reach top speed on the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds, but we have never seen a race at the historic location. Technically, this wasn't a real race – like in previous vehicles, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye lined up in the Florida sun to overtake three kilometers of smooth concrete. With 797 horsepower (594 kilowatts) under the hood, Dodge says the beefy Hellcat can hit 203 mph. As it turns out, the muscle car can also humiliate small planes flying overhead.

The video plays like any other Johnny Bohmer pass. We see the Redeye being fired from the outside, the view in the car showing the telemetry data. After a simple rollout, the speed increases very quickly over 100 miles per hour. However, the Challenger is not equipped with high-speed aerodynamics, and the pace slows noticeably at 160 mph. In fact, the 14 seconds it takes the Redeye to get from 180 to its best speed of 191.3 miles an hour is about the same time it takes to get from 100 to 160.

Normally that would be the catch of this story – the Challenger Redeye lags far behind its announced top speed. However, if you look closely in the upper right corner of the video, a light aircraft will appear immediately after the Challenger starts. It is a single-engined low-wing aircraft, and although we cannot identify it exactly, we suspect that it was traveling at 120 mph. This is due to the fact that the Redeye quickly closes the gap between its unofficial competitor in the air north of this speed and the aircraft completely disappears from the camera at a speed of around 200 km / h. It is also possible that the Challenger could have driven a bit faster with more space to run. 3.7 km of the entire 5.2 km long strip was used for this pass, presumably because a standard Hellcat does not have a parachute to slow down and its brakes cannot brake as quickly as, say, a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Still, it was quick enough to hit an airplane that was already cooking in the air over the space shuttle's runway, and we brag about the rights for this competition.
